In a short time, The Real Food Movement has really come into its own. Your commitment to incorporating real, local food into your diet has resulted in some real change.
From urban gardens to a nation wide movement.
The Real Food Movement started with the Urban Gardens Project. The goal was to get Canadians excited about growing and eating local food. To help us reach as many communities as possible we partnered with Evergreen and local groups.

Eating local is good for both the people who eat it and the people who produce it. Hellmann's 2009 Eat Real, Eat Local program educated Canadians about their food choices and helped them incorporate real, locally sourced Canadian food into their diets.

Partnership with Evergreen

Hellmann's and Evergreen, a national charity that makes cities more livable, began working together in 2007 when they co-established the Hellmann's Urban Gardens program. Continuing into 2008, they sourced garden plots and awarded them to Canadians in major cities across the country. In 2009, when Canadians participated in the Eat Real, Eat Local program, Hellmann's donated funds to Evergreen to support local food resources and community food gardening programs.
Look how you helped:
- $35,000 donated to Evergreen
- Over 6,000 Facebook posts and tweets about "realfood" sparking hundreds of conversations all over the blogosphere
- Over 150,000 actions taken
- Over 3,000 grocers request letters
And the movement lives on. More tweets, posts and news are still being shared. Good work.
